Spain entered the French and Indian War on behalf of France  in 1762 (1) .  Britain gained Florida from Spain after the French and Indian War.  They had captured Havana, Cuba which was Spain's primary shipping port in the New World.  Spain desperately wanted Havana back so they traded Cuba for Florida in conjunction with the Treaty of Paris(2).  Upon the transfer of ownership, most Spanish citizens fled to Cuba leaving the Floridas mostly vacant (3).
